GROWING SUPPORT FOR MARRIAGE EQUALITY
Obama Administration Announces It Will No Longer Defend the Defense of Marriage Act
Battle for Marriage Equality Ramps up in the States
- A poll conducted by Fox news this past August found overwhelming support for gay relationships. When asked if they believed “gays and lesbians should be allowed to get legally married, allowed a legal partnership similar to but not called marriage, or should there be no legal recognition given to gay and lesbian relationships?” only 28% of those polled indicated that same-sex couples should be afforded no legal recognition. Thirty-seven percent of participants felt that same sex couples should be allowed to marry legally and 29% indicated that they believed same-sex couples should be allowed legal partnerships.
- An AP National Constitution Center Poll also suggests growing support for same sex couples. In 2010, when asked “Should couples of the same sex be entitled to the same government benefits as married couples of the opposite sex, or should the government distinguish between them,” 58% of Americans believed they should be entitled to the same benefits, compared to just 51% in 2008.
- Similarly, in 2010 the ABC News/Washington Post Poll also found that support for gay marriage is on the rise, according to the poll a plurality of Americans (47%) thought it should be legal for gay and lesbian couples to marry in contrast to just 37% in 2003.
