Jill Mizell, Public Opinion and Media Research Associate

Since 2009, Jill’s career with The Opportunity Agenda has progressed from research intern, to research assistant, to her current position as Public Opinion and Media Research Associate. Jill designs and authors public opinion and media research publications for strategic communications, consults on strategic communications initiatives through the lens of public opinion and media research, spearheads the evaluative research efforts, and provides in-house statistical expertise. Jill has authored numerous publications, including “Public Opinion on Opportunity and the American Dream, Homeownership, and Housing,”and has presented on human rights, reproductive justice, and economic opportunity research. Jill is the co-editor of the Public Opinion Monthly, a blog that synthesizes and analyzes public opinion research on a variety of social justice issues.

Working in tandem with colleagues, Jill is engaged in the development of a coalition among domestic Civil Rights and Fair Housing organizations seeking to address multiple components of housing policy and practice that lead to unequal and disparate outcomes in housing and homeownership. Her research and evaluation provide insight in to the narrative development and communications strategy for a large group of individuals and organizations previously working independently towards the same end.

Jill has extensive experience in marketing analysis, pitching, and promotion of consumer products, including the launch of Gardasil, the first vaccine for girls and women that prevents cervical cancer. During her studies she interned with Demos, a public policy research and advocacy organization, assisting the Economic Opportunity Program with policy research on financial barriers to post-secondary education.

Jill was selected by Oxfam America to be co-leader of its New York City Action Corps, and is undergoing extensive leadership, communications, and spokesperson training relating to organizing and advocacy around global poverty and food justice issues. In addition, Jill sits on the advisory board for Musicianwages.com, a community for working musicians that advocates for a robust musician middle-class. She is also an active member of the American Association for Public Opinion Research (AAPOR), having been selected to pilot a new mentoring program, and participating in the abstract review and selection process for the 2012 professional conference.

In addition to an M.S. in Applied Social Research from Hunter College, City University of New York, and a B.S. in Finance from Indiana University’s Kelley School of Business, Jill has undergone extensive post-graduate training in survey research and evaluation. In her free time, Jill volunteers for the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) and enjoys running races to raise money for charity.
