The reproductive justice (RJ) movement works to create a society in which all people have the economic, social, and political resources necessary to make healthy decisions about their bodies, sexuality, and reproduction for themselves, their families, and their communities. Reproductive justice concerns focus on the issues facing low- income women and communities of color, including economic, cultural, and immigration barriers to accessing services; matters relating to sexuality, sexual orientation, and gender identity; disparities in community investment and protection of rights based on race, ethnicity, gender, disabilities, and language; and innovative models for addressing gender-based violence. These concerns are expressed in struggles over restrictive reproductive health and policing policies at the national and state levels.
A growing group of reproductive justice organizations and leaders has made significant strides in raising awareness and building a movement for change, but there remain many gaps in the movement's communications infrastructure. Limited resources have prevented advocates from developing a united and effective values-based narrative; an empirical understanding of different audiences and their attitudes; the communications tools to move relevant messages; and the placement in mainstream, ethnic, and new media needed to move hearts, minds, and policy over time.
The Opportunity Agenda is collaborating with a group of leading reproductive justice advocates and organizations to develop a coordinated frame and communications strategy, designed to move policy in the short term and shift the public dialogue around these issues in the long term. Through this project, the movement aspires to foster a new conversation about reproductive health, based on respect for human rights and appreciation of the need for a full range of opportunities.
