New York, NY – Today, the U.S. Senate confirmed Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson, 53 to 47, as Associate Justice to the U.S. Supreme Court. In response to this historic vote, Ellen Buchman, President of The Opportunity Agenda, issued the following statement:
Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson’s confirmation to the United State Supreme Court marks a historic moment in the centuries-long fight for racial justice and civil rights. It is, indeed, a momentous occasion, one that could not have occurred without the vision, resolve, and sacrifice of those who never gave up hope, and whose commitment to justice has stood the test of time.
Sixty-eight years after Rosa Parks took a stand against unjust segregation laws by holding her seat, and with the unyielding leadership of countless unsung Black women leaders, a Black woman is finally taking her seat on the bench of our country’s highest court. Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson’s confirmation affirms what can be accomplished with strength and unity of purpose and will inspire millions of Black girls who are watching. It warms my heart to know that today, Black girls and their siblings, can see a woman who looks like them at this pinnacle of achievement.
Today we celebrate, tomorrow we return to the work, joining with our partners in the fight against white supremacy and patriarchy, to make the vision of equity and justice for all a reality.
